You may think that because summer is over that your outdoor Michigan fun has to come to an end, however, the reality is quite the contrary. Michigan is a lovely place to spend time outdoors in during the fall. During the next few weeks the trees will start to change their colors and will paint the landscape into beautiful reds, oranges and yellows. The air will start to turn brisk and at moments it will take your breath away, however the crisp air will also somehow refresh you at the same time.
There truly is something magical about a Michigan fall, something that you just need to experience for yourself. Over the next few weeks and into October we will be traveling around the state of Michigan showing you the best places to visit during the fall season, we will also be highlighting the best Halloween destinations in the area. Be sure to keep an eye out for all of our great discoveries and events coming soon.
For our first expedition this fall season we took a trip into Port Sanilac, MI. We had a wedding to attend in the area and found it the perfect opportunity to visit a new Michigan area that we hadn’t been to before. This was my first time visiting Port Sanilac, however it is the neighbor city to Port Huron, which if you remember we visited only a few weeks ago. While we were in Port Sanilac we stayed at the Lake Huron Campground and quickly found that it is a lovely place to visit during the fall season. In this campground we were surrounded by the beautiful fall weather, but were able to stay warm at night by staying in one of the campgrounds many heated cabins.
Staying in a cabin is a great way to still be able to enjoy camping in Michigan once the weather turns to cold for a tent and many of the parks now offer cabins to rent for a very reasonable rate. Plus, visiting in the Fall season can help save you money over visiting in the summer because the fall is most likely the campgrounds off season and they often have empty cabins that they want to fill.
The natural elements that surrounded this campground were absolutely stunning and I think that their beauty will only enhance in the fall. Just take a look at a few of the beautiful images I was able to capture during my morning walk around the campground! I can only image how lovely this area will look within the next few weeks as the colors in nature start to change.
Even though the weather is turning colder doesn’t mean that you can’t still enjoy camping as a family. Just remember to dress warm and bring lots of extra layers plus your camera to capture the amazing colors! Camping in cooler weather is also a great opportunity for you to make some hot cocoa over a campfire and relax by it to stay warm. We enjoyed a campfire during the colder nights while we were camping and it actually was quite lovely.
More fun ideas to make your Fall camping experience better:
– Have a color scavenger hunt around the campground. The first person to find a natural object in each of the colors of the rainbow wins.
– Go on a color tour and photograph the beauty.
– Zip line through the color changing trees.
About our Experience:
For this trip my husband and I traveled solo, however the grounds are very family friendly and the cabins have enough room for families to all stay together. The cabin we stayed in had a separate “parents” room with a queen sized bed and another room with bunk beds and an open loft space. They also had outdoor community sinks and cooking areas. My only complaint with the cabins are their lack of private bathroom facilities. While the bathrooms are extremely close to the cabins, I still like to have that comfort of my own “space” in that aspect. However for the price and the cleanliness of this campground you simply can’t go wrong.
