Road trips as a family are fantastic – I love exploring the world with my kids and seeing their eyes light up to new discoveries. Sometimes, however, it is nice to get away without them – to have adult conversations and stay up late. I mean seriously, what happens these days after 8 pm anyways? I don’t even know!!
Getting away without the kids is a totally different experience than road tripping as a family – it’s an experience that I try and book into my schedule at least once or twice a year for my sanity’s sake. However, not always can I find a way to make that happen – you know how schedules can go. So recently when I was given the opportunity to test drive the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata for an entire week around my own hometown I decided to turn to the little two seater into an excuse to carve out some one-on-one time with my husband.
5 Reasons to Get Away as a Couple in the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata.
While we didn’t end up leaving town – we did take this opportunity with the car as an excuse to spend some time together. Yes, sometimes we do need an excuse – we’re busy people. So we called up the babysitter and took to the road – undoubtedly one of our favorite things to do. While I wasn’t expecting our drive to be anything more than a chance to learn about the car and an opportunity to get out of the house, I was surprised at what I found and how much I liked this car. Before taking this opportunity I probably would have never considered this vehicle suitable for a couples road trip – however now after this experience I have a much different opinion. Here are just a few reasons why I am seriously considering taking the Mazda Miata with me again for my next couples get away.
It was different than the every day. For some, this could totally work as an everyday vehicle. However, being a mother with two young kids – this isn’t a vehicle that I would have the luxury of driving on a daily basis. That could be part of the appeal. Like a vacation – it’s different than the normal everyday. It even had a cloth convertible top – which I couldn’t wait to try out but didn’t get the chance to due to our near snow like temperatures even now in to spring – next time remind me to take it somewhere warm.
It was intimate. While the Miata wouldn’t be the right size for our entire family – it is the perfect size for just the two of us. The cabin area was intimate offering a nice space to hold a conversation and connect in – yet still roomy offering us a chance to feel close but not cramped (although keep in mind we’re both only about 5’6).
It was an experience. We found driving this car to be an exciting experience since it maneuvered on the road much like you would expect a sports car to handle. I was still a novice to the manual transmission, but was able to shift through the gears like a pro. I was also happy to find that the vehicle had Dynamic Stability Control and Traction Control System for added control in different road conditions – especially since we sometimes see snow here in the Midwest more than we see sunshine. Again – somewhere with salty air and sand is perfect.
It had all the right details. When I take a getaway away from home, I like to stay somewhere that pays attention to the details. The same is true for the cars I like to drive. Mazda in my opinion did an excellent job paying extra attention to the details inside the Miata with coordinating but contrasting stitching, luxury upgrades such as a 7 ” touch screen navigation and stereo, heated seats and added safety features such as blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert. The vehicle we drove was also equipped with a spot to set our phones and two easily accessed USB ports right up front. While there wasn’t a ton of space to work with in the Miata – I feel like the space was well managed and designed in a way that made sense.
We found luxury at price we could afford. Surprisingly, the MX-5 Miata’s start out at about $30,000 with a nice list of included standard equipment and get an average of 30 miles to the gallon! Personally I was expecting the price to be much higher for the level of quality I experienced in this vehicle. At that price point it might be feasible for some to purchase this vehicle as a secondary car and still keep the larger family vehicle for an everyday driver.
There were so many things that I loved about the 2016 Mazda M-5 Miata – it definitely made for a fun week! While there are so many great points to love about this vehicle – there are also a few things to consider.
- Trunk/storage space is super tight – if you are leaving home for a weekend away together you will need to be a light packer. There is also a small rear storage console between the seats.
- This car sits super close to the ground – I didn’t have a problem but for some it may be difficult to get in and out of the vehicle.
Have you ever considered buying a sports car? Would you consider it as an every day driver or only as a secondary car? Tell us your opinion.
