It’s time to pull out the slow cookers again, but did you know they’re not only useful for dinners? You can totally make a fresh, hot dessert in them too with the minimal effort that we all have come to love with these machines! Today I am sharing the simple recipe that I use for making fresh apple crisp made in my slow cooker at home – don’t miss it.
Being in the midwest during the autumn is probably one of my favorite things. The leaves put on the most vibrant show of colors and everywhere I turn there seems to be an apple orchard beckoning me to walk its aisles and pick its fresh offerings. I have come to learn that I am not one to resist such a temptation and have been soaking up the beauty and tastes of the orchards probably a little more than I should. Now if I don’t do something soon with my collection of apples sitting on the counter my family is going to freak (or worse, the apples are going to spoil). Oops.
In the beginning, I had plans to bake a lovely apple pie or create caramel covered apples with the kids for Halloween. Although, like most great ideas that I have, time got away from me and now we’re down to the wire. As I mulled over what to do with my apples, so many options came to mind but none as easy as my slow cooker apple crisp recipe. Not only is this recipe super easy to make and requests little time of me, but it also fills my home with the most incredible smells of apple, spice, and warmth. It’s truly a winner!
So if you’re looking for an easy autumn recipe that is basically just “toss it all in the slow cooker and walk away” – here it is. Because I know how busy we can all get and sometimes we just want a little bit of fresh, homemade dessert at the end of the day. Right?
So here is to not letting all those apples you picked this autumn season to go to waste! 🙂
Slow Cooker Apple Crisp
5-8 apples – peeled and sliced
1/2 cup light brown sugar
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 cup of old-fashioned oats
1/4 cup light brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup unsalted butter – cubed
Coat the slow cooker in non-stick spray. Fill it with sliced apples, light brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir to coat.
In a separate bowl, combine the toppings ingredients: oats, flour, light brown sugar, cinnamon, salt and butter cubes.
Pour the topping mix over the apple mixture in the slow cooker. Place the lid on and cook on low for 4 hours – or until apples are soft.
After baking, turn off the slow cooker and allow the dessert to cool with the lid on for about 30 minutes.
Serve with vanilla ice cream.
