Getting through a Midwest winter is tough. Just when you think it’s about to end, mother nature sometimes likes to throw another snowy curve-ball your way. Luckily, there exists a location in Sandusky, Ohio to help you cope with mother nature’s unsuitable wrath. Over the weekend we were invited to come and explore this location as a family. Here are the reasons why we decided Castaway Bay Indoor Waterpark Resort will be our choice again for a tropical weekend escape.
Castaway Bay Indoor Waterpark Resort | Sandusky, Ohio
Waiting can be hard. Waiting for spring to arrive, waiting for school to let out, waiting for a chance to put that swimming suit back on and jump in a pool! These are all things my family has a hard time waiting for. It also doesn’t make it any easier when the weather here in the Midwest often likes to tease us with spring. In my head it goes something like this:
Hey, there. It’s warming up outside – why don’t you come out and play. Look the flowers, they’re starting to bud. Come enjoy the sunshine!
Ha! Tricked you. I’m going to make it snow again. I LOVE WINTER! HA HA HA!
I tend to hear the voice of the weather in the Midwest as having a nasty evil laugh. Just when you think the cold temperatures and ice are finally ending, they come back to bite. Thankfully, we’ve found that there IS a way to stop the wait.
Over the weekend, my family and I were invited to visit Castaway Bay Indoor Waterpark Resort. This was our first time visiting Castaway Bay, but not our first time at an indoor waterpark. We have quite a bit of experience in this area as we have always had a fondness for the year-round warmth they provide.
Let’s bring on the margaritas (and coffee)!
Without having to venture too far from the waterpark area, you can find yourself in a suitable room to rest for the night. This waterpark resort has 237 hotel rooms and suites, plus other added rooms to make your stay more comfortable (like a guest laundry, restaurants, and common areas with ample seating).
Our accommodations for this stay was one of the resorts Starfish Bay-View rooms. It fit our family of four perfectly and even had a serene view of the bay and a private porch which I loved using to decompress after the busy day.
Our room also had:
- 2 double beds
- mini fridge
- desk/table area
- screened in balcony overlooking the bay

One of the greatest pulls of this location is it’s tropical oasis themed indoor waterpark area, complete with waterslides, rides, a wave pool, and more. However, that isn’t the only attraction to experience during a stay at Castaway Bay. There are actually a lot more.
The first thing my kids wanted to do when we arrived at Castaway Bay was to head to the waterpark area. Since our room wasn’t quite ready yet (we arrived early before posted check-in time) we found that we could grab our wristbands from the front desk and change into our swimsuits in the waterpark adjacent locker rooms. The locker rooms had benches to drop your things on as you changed, plus showers to use afterward. Next to the locker rooms were lockers to use for the day. They could be rented by size for $10, $15, or $20.
As a mother, I love that the waterpark area was well staffed with extremely attentive lifeguards. They even stopped my children a couple of times to check their height and determine whether or not they needed life jackets upon entering specific areas. There are places, such as the wave pool, where this required for smaller or less experienced swimmers.
After testing the waves in the wave pool and trying their skills at the Cargo Crossing, my kids finally had the courage to take on the bigger waterslides like the Tropical Tube Slides and the Rendezvous Run. The last of those is a two person raft ride that drops riders down a steep slide and then shoots them back up a water propelled hill, leaving them to finally curve around to the end of the slide. It’s quite the ride!
After hours spent playing poolside, we decided to take a break from the splash and headed on a self-guided exploration of the resort. We quickly found ourselves peering in through large windows at a room filled with excitement- Club Castaway. This area of the resort can be found on the third floor and is designated for younger guests with scheduled events, crafts, and non-water related fun.
In the Club Castaway, we sang karaoke, had a dance party, and colored Castaway Bay themed t-shirts to take home with us. Parents are welcome to join in the fun too! Just be sure to stop by the front desk to grab a copy of the Island Times brochure – this lists all the times for the events in Club Castaway as well as times and location for PEANUTS™ Gang meet and greets!
Castaway Bay Arcade
Next to the indoor waterpark is the Castaway Bay Arcade, a room filled with fun games and prizes to be won. We gave each kid a budget by loading them up with a play card upon entry. All they needed to do to play a game was slide their card through the slot on the front of the game – no more jingling pockets full of coins! That wasn’t the only thing missing either. In an effort to go “green” the arcade no longer issues paper winners tickets. Winnings are loaded back on to the winner’s card and can be redeemed at the ticket counter for prizes.

One thing I loved most about Castaway Bay was the ample food options within the resort. I often distaste having to pack my kids up and go out in search of food or coffee in the morning. At Castaway Bay, we simply slipped on our sandals and walked downstairs to find our choice of a family restaurant, a breakfast spot, a snack area that serves my favorite coffee, and a small convenience store.
Once we arrived, there really wasn’t any need to leave. Until, of course, our stay was over.
On the way home my kids cried that they didn’t want to leave. That was either the work of total exhaustion or a sign of a really great time. Either way, I think I’ll call it a success.
