Today I wanted to share with you a little re purpose project that I just completed. I wanted you to see that turning junk into something functional can be easier than you think. For this project I found an old wire plant stand at my local Goodwill store for $2. I also found an odd candle holder thing at a garage sale for $1. Yard sales and the Goodwill are great places to look for re purposing items, but you can also find free things on the side of the road. You wouldn’t believe what people will just throw away.
My friend Sara calls picking things up off the side of the road “Roadside Rescue”. I think that’s a much cuter way of saying “dumpster diving”. lol. It sounds much more dignified.
I tend to collect things that I find interesting looking. When I am out browsing yard sales I look for things that catch my eye. These things can be broken, old or just a piece of something that used to be. . it doesn’t really matter. If it has a cool color or has an interesting shape, I’ll pick it up. Then I can later go into my stash and hold things together and wait for an idea to pop into my head. Sometimes just tilting your head and looking at something a little different than the norm can help to spark your imagination.
This project was as easy as gluing the two salvaged pieces together. They were a perfect fit and looked like they belonged together from the beginning. It’s funny sometimes how things work out.
To hold the two pieces together I used Elmer’s Glue-All Max. I bought it at my local hardware store and it really holds just about anything together. So far I have no complaints with it. It is made to bind almost any materials, so its very versatile. I also glued the glass dish to the base, but now I am thinking that leaving it loose would have been much better for washing and such.
After allowing the two pieces to dry for a few days I added a few rocks to the dish with some water and set it to display in my yard.
Now, these two unwanted treasures have been turned into a very functional and lovely looking butterfly bath (or bird bath) with a trellis base. When the vines planted at the base grow up around the bath it will create a secluded spot for my butterflies to land.
If you’re just getting started junk’n the best way to get things rolling is by creating a stash to work from. This is the fun part. . collect anything you find interesting. The rest will follow.
Thank you for joining us today!
