My sister was a New Years baby and while you would think that having a birthday on New Years day would be wonderful because of all the parties, my sister hates it. She feels overlooked every year. So this year my family and I decided on big plans to throw her a very special birthday party. Our plans consisted of having all the sisters and their children spend the night at our mothers house on News Years Eve. We were going to stay up all night eating appetizers, drinking fun drinks and celebrating her birthday and New Years eve together. Finally, the plan was to wake up early and have a big birthday breakfast complete with cake for her actual birthday on New Years day. However, our big plans fell through. I ended up having two sick kids on New Years Eve and spent all of New Years day with my son at the hospital ER. While I know that things were simply out of my control, I still feel horrible for allowing her birthday to pass me by once again without making it special for her. So the kids and I have cooked up a very special little something to surprise her. Shh. . don’t tell.
We headed out to Walmart with plans to purchase several Happy Birthday cards to “try” and make up for missing her big day. Luckily for us, when we got to Walmart we found that they carry a large selection of $0.47 and $0.97 value birthday cards. Perfect! Now we can pick out a whole bunch of cards as we had planned for our surprise and not break the bank. The kids were excited. They had a blast going through each card (which took FOREVER) and picking out their favorite card to send to their aunt. My son of course picked a robot. 🙂 I mean of course, if he liked it than she must like it too!
So now we are ready. We have all of our cards. Our plan is to bombard her this week with birthday cards. What do you think, should I mail them all at once or one at a time? What do you think would be most fun for her? I love planning fun surprises!
While we were planning this little surprise for my sister I was also given a little surprise! I was surprised at how many value cards Hallmark has available! I found so many that I loved and at the value price I decided to stock up! I especially loved this cute little cupcake card, however it said “To My Granddaughter”. . . yeah. . I am not quite there yet but I really liked that cupcake picture so I bought it anyways. Don’t worry though. I have a plan!
Before I get to my Valentines Day plan I wanted to share the Hallmark Rewards Program with you. I didn’t know that it existed, but I am so glad I know now! You can now earn a reward for purchasing Hallmark cards at Walmart. For every five cards you purchase you will earn a reward! That’s like getting a birthday present in return for giving birthday presents to others! Whoo hoo!

So on to my Valentines treat inspired by the cupcake Hallmark card. I decided to create this today. Afterall, I wanted to “test” out my plans before Valentines Day arrived so I would be ready.
The first thing I did was bake a big batch of chocolate cupcakes. I made them from scratch, but you can also simply use a boxed cake mix. Once the cupcakes were cooked and cooled I layered the ingredients within a mason jar. First frosting, then cupcake, then peppermint baking chips and so on all the way to the top.
I decided to use the Hallmark value card that I bought and create a hang tag for my gift.
I cut around the cupcake image to remove it from the card. Next I loved the wording inside that I decided to cut it out to use as well. Simply cut a hole at the top of each card and voila! You’ve got a handmade hang tag that is super cute and says everything you are feeling. Now all you need are the recipes!

Since it is not quite Valentines Day yet the kids and I decided to devour this sweet treat ourselves today, but I have put the cards and jar aside to use again for special gifts when Valentines Day does arrive. It’s great to be prepared! Thanks to our little trip to Walmart and their Hallmark value cards I am not only prepared for Valentines Day but any other birthday’s or holidays coming up for the next year! <–Feeling good. No more missed birthdays on my watch!
