Things are changing in my household – I might be losing control. Seriously, why didn’t anybody warn me? I remember those first years of back-to-school shopping when I hand picked everything for my kids and couldn’t wait to send them off on the bus in my fabulously curated fashions. They looked so freakin’ cute!! And they didn’t care what they were wearing – they were more interested in what snack I packed in their bags or if they were going to have art class that day. Good times.
Last weekend we decided it was once again time to hit the mall for some back-to-school clothes for the upcoming year. We all jumped in the car and headed over to Fairlane Town Center mall. Shopping at a mall is usually our go-to for back to school because they have everything we need under one roof – clothes, shoes, accessories. It’s just easier that way. As we walked into the mall I instinctively took charge and started to do my typical shopping habits – picking up things I thought would be comfortable, practical and super adorable. This is when I realized that things had changed. Apparently, even though I have successfully crafted their wardrobes over the last 9+ years, I had absolutely no fashion sense. . .
While they might think that my fashion sense in failing, there is no doubt in my mind that I’ve learned something valuable from this trip. Here are my best 5 tips for getting a passing grade back-to-school shopping with a tween.
5 Tips to Back-to-School Shopping with a Tween
1 . Let their individual style shine. Yep, I get ya – it’s hard to do. Especially when they would look SO adorable in that outfit you picked out! While I was sure to make it known upfront that their dad and I got the final say on what we bought, I found that it was easier to let the kids pick out what they liked and what made them feel good. Plus, it turns out that they are pretty good at creating a style all on their own and it’s pretty darn cute too!
2 . Remember that this time is special. As I was waiting outside the dressing room for my daughter at one of the stores, I decided to pull out my phone and scroll through my feed. A good friend of mine posted something that made me stop and think – it read “I wish I could still take my kids back to school shopping. Miss it now that they’re all grown up.”. Ok yes, even though at times it can be trying, I know that there will be a day when I miss this time too.
3. Take time to replenish your energy. Remember when back-to-school shopping was a quick trip to the mall? That changes – we needed to take a break this year and grab a snack. Luckily for us, the Fairlane Town Center mall has a great food court that we popped over to for some pizza and pretzels. It gave us the energy to carry on and finish getting what we needed.
4. Save money when you can. Kids are expensive and as they grow it seems to only get worse. Finding ways to save money wherever possible is smart! We always look for buy one/get one deals, clearance rack items, and are sure to take advantage of Fairlane Town Centers “Oh, So Simple Rewards” program. With this program, shoppers are rewarded with $10 back onto their account when they spend $250 in the mall using their pre-registered credit or debit card. The rewards can then be used at any of the Fairlane Town Center stores. You can sign up for this totally awesome program at guest information.
5. Remember to laugh. As we walked through the Fairlane mall, I looked up to see a very important quote printed on the arches. With a tween daughter, it’s a good one to remember.
