Yep, there it is – my FIRST gray hair. It’s right there on the top of my head. At first, I thought I had a string in my hair because no strand of mine would ever be that freakin’ white. But nope. A good tug on it solidified the notion. I have reached the years of gray hair.
There it is! Ok, maybe I should say there “they” are. So super bright and white, aren’t they? 🙂
At first, I took a minute to consider yanking it out. That IS what we’re supposed to do, right? Get those pesky reminders of age out of sight? However after I looked at it for a moment longer in the light, and gazed upon its brilliant ability to sparkle when turned just the right way, I decided to keep it.
In all actuality, I sort of like it. It’s like a strand of glitter. Ha, I’m growing freaking glitter on my head! What!?
As I marveled in its bright white appearance and odd thick texture for a bit longer, I decided that I couldn’t keep this news to myself. With my strand of white hair in hand, I ran (well fast walked) to the kitchen to tell my nine-year-old daughter the news.
“TeeTee (that’s what we call her), look at this! My hair is turning white! Do you see this little strand of white hair right here?”
My daughter took a minute to look up from the book that she was reading and squinted her eyes at me in search of my discovery. Where? she asked. Right here, I said in a “how can you not see this” tone. OH! she said as her eyes widened and a huge smile came across her face – THAT IS AWESOME!!
I know right, I said half-heartedly.
As I looked at the pride and excitement stream across her face I couldn’t help but also be happy for my new stage in life. Just as I had clapped and marveled in each of her milestones over the last nine years, here she was embracing mine. The tables have turned.
So I will accept this new strand of gray full heartedly because through all of the smiles, tears, moments of triumph and failure – I’ve earned these strands of awesomeness glitter!
Besides – having white hair will make it SO much easier for me to dye my hair pink, right??
What happened to you today that you can look on the bright side of ? Tell me in the comments.
