Planning a road trip is not only about getting to your destination. A successful road trip takes a little bit more than that. Over our years of travel, I’ve learned that there are several things which can contribute to a positive trip outcome – like buying Pennzoil at Walmart.com ahead of time and having it shipped to my home. Ready to hear the rest of my tips? Buckle your seat belts!
Let’s Hit the Road
If you’ve been following along with our blog, you may already know that we are a road-tripping family. Being on the road and wandering new places is our love story. However, it hasn’t always been perfect. We’ve seen our fair share of obstacles and moments that made us wonder what we got ourselves into.
There have been times when our car has broken down, we’ve been lost in the woods with no cell service, we’ve struggled through those moments of “I’m hungry”, “Are we there yet”, and “I’m bored”. While these moments of travel haven’t been our finest, they have taught us something about being prepared.
Yes, even a wanderer (like me) needs to think ahead…
6 Things to Do Before a Road Trip
While these tips may not be everything to know before hitting the road, they are a really great place to start.
1 . Decide Where to Go
No, I’m not just talking about the destination. While having a “turning around point” is a good idea, planning for fun stops along the route can also contribute to the overall success of the trip!
Some of our favorite things to do on a road trip are to search for roadside attractions or free public art. We also love to watch for scenic outlook signs or interesting looking billboards to guide us to new adventures.
Tip: Having a conversation about everyone’s level of spontaneity before hitting the road is a good idea. Also, extra stops do add to the overall driving time. Remember, it’s never fun to overdo it.
2. Keep the vehicle road trip ready
A successful road trip lies heavily on having a healthy running vehicle. In order to keep our 1950 Bel Air running at its peak performance, we follow our vehicles manual and always give our car extra love before we hit the road. This includes checking the tires and keeping our vehicle up to date with its oil changes.
Tip: Having the tools to keep a vehicle healthy is quick and easy with Walmart.com! We simply go online, purchase the Pennzoil motor oil that matches our cars needs, and have it shipped directly to our home! No need to add any extra chaos to the time when we are already busy packing and planning.
Here’s how it works:
Go to Walmart.com and pick out the proper motor oil for your vehicle.
We choose to use Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic High Mileage because our 1950 Bel Air has definitely already ticked past 75,000 driving miles! Need help deciding which oil suits your vehicle? Use the motor oil comparison chart.
Within just a few days, the motor oil arrived at my door! They even have options available for curbside or store pickup – great if you need something after you’re already on the road.
Did you know that according to Pennzoil, its oil is designed for complete protection and they’ve estimated that by using Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic Motor Oil to help keep your engine clean, you can drive on average an extra 550 miles per year, versus a dirty engine? There are a lot of places I’d like to go with those extra 550 miles! How about you?
3. Plan What You’ll Eat
While we love finding new places to eat along the road, let’s face it, sometimes there are no good options available. For this reason, I always make sure to bring along our cooler with several good snack options. For my family, I always make sure to pack things like fresh fruits, cheeses, crackers, and jerky.
4. Keep Things Interesting with Audio Books
Even though I am always prepared with a list of fun places to stop, the reality is that sometimes we drive hours through areas where there is seriously nothing but trees.
Oh, look, more trees…
During these times, having something to keep your mind entertained is priceless! A great way we prepare for this “boring” time is to download audio books onto our devices before we leave. Think about it, what books have you been meaning to find the time to read?
Tip: We love to visit our local library before a road trip. They often have audio books available for free rental.
5. Plan an Emergency Kit
Even though we don’t often need it, I always keep an emergency kit in the trunk when we travel. This small container includes items such as a paper map, a flashlight, a blanket, bandages, and anything else we might need in an emergency.
Tip: Having this packed and always in the trunk eliminates the need for me to repack these items every time we go somewhere. Plus, it makes me feel less anxious when we travel.
6. Prepare your phone with the best travel apps
I simply love how technology has been able to enrich our travels. There are so many apps available on our phones that can aid us in finding roadside attractions, good restaurants, places to get gas, and so much more.
Tip: My advice is to research the most useful apps to you and learn how to use them before you hit the road. Having these readily at your finger tips can make all the difference.
Where to Next? Possibly a Guns n’ Roses Concert
If simplifying your road trip preparations with Walmart.com wasn’t awesome enough, now there is a chance you could also win tickets to a Guns n’ Roses concert by doing it!
Here’s how it works:
Simply purchase 2 qualifying Pennzoil Motor oils (in-store or online) and upload your receipt to Walmart.com to receive $10 Ticketmaster Ticket Cash with Purchase. All entrants will then also be entered into a sweepstakes to win tickets to a Guns N’ Roses concert as part of their “Not In This Lifetime” tour!
Now that is a trip I’d love to make!
