I finally created a retro home office in my tiny living room space – and I LOVE it! Come see how I did it and shop the items that I used to create it. Seriously, this new office space has me giddy!!
The Couch IS Cozy…
For the longest time, I have been doing my daily work from my living room couch. Sounds nice – but working while sitting on the couch creates its own obstacles.
- It’s cozy – not great for getting things done.
- I had nowhere to store my things – like documents that I need. They were always getting people’s cups sat on them – or worse, water spilled on them!
So I decided that I work hard and it was about time that I take care of myself. It was time for me to set up a home office.
Problem: There’s No Home Office Space
One of the reasons that I don’t think I’ve ever had a home office is because there isn’t any space for one. When my son was born, we decided to turn my office space into a bedroom for him. Since then, I’ve been working from the couch.
Looking around, I decided that I could probably squeeze a little home office space into the living room. Not far from my couch…breaking up can be so hard to do.
So this is what I am working with: very minimal space and a retro idea in my head. Let’s make it happen!
Piecing It All Together
I am so excited to show you how I pieced together my new (retro-inspired) home office within a teenie tiny space in my living room! Like what you see? I will leave links below to help you find each item that I bought.
Ready? Here it is!!
The Perfect Desk
The first thing I searched for was, of course, the desk. I knew that I wanted something slim that wouldn’t take up a lot of room. After searching for quite some time, I finally settled on this light wood and white metal desk.
It’s pretty basic, but that’s what I wanted! Now I have the opportunity to make it my own!
Found a Mid Century Modern Chair
I never knew I could get giddy over a chair but here I am, giddy as can be!
When I first laid eyes on this white mid-century modern piece, I knew it had to be mine. Now that it has arrived at my doorstep, I still adore it! It’s comfortable but not TOO comfortable. If you know what I mean. . .
Storage Needed: File Cabinet
Because this desk didn’t come with anything storage wise, I knew that I needed to buy that separately. So I picked up a matching three drawer cabinet from Amazon and it worked out perfectly!
Cool note: the file cabinet also fits directly under the desk, still leaving enough room for leg space. Just in case you’re working with even less space than I am!
I Adore The Accessories
Now, what would my retro home office be without accessories? Luckily, I was able to purchase a few new items that had that retro appeal. No thrift store shopping this time – except for the wall art. That was thrifted awhile back.
So, the first new item I picked up for my home office was this vintage looking bicycle bookend set. I have a thing for vintage bicycles. In fact, this item will bring my tally up to three bicycle accessories in my living room.
When I find something I like…
Next, I bought this retro-inspired lamp (which I ADORE)! It works great. Isn’t it spectacular!
I also picked up this pen storage piece at Target. It works well to keep pens where I can find them and my planning books as well.
It says: If you can dream it you can do it – Walt Disney
Finally, I couldn’t forget my little Lincoln head that I made in the mold press at the Henry Ford Museum. Why do I like this little guy so much? Either way, he’s staying.
So, that’s it! My retro home office design! I couldn’t be more happy with the new space and I hope being organized will help me get more work accomplished.
It probably will, right??
