I Am Not Going to Spend That
I love to travel. However, I’m also a pretty frugal person and travel costs money. Sometimes a whole lot of it! So, I often find myself in a battle of wanting to go somewhere but not wanting to forfeit the money to get there. Sound familiar to anyone?
Thankfully, over the years I have learned a few tricks to saving money when I go places. It’s a good thing too because otherwise, my stubborn personality would probably put a damper on me leaving the house at all <–I’m hardcore frugal sometimes.
So, these tricks are not super difficult and they don’t take a lot of time – and I’m not just talking about only going to see free roadside attractions (although you do know I adore free entertainment).
These tricks are basically just knowing what tactics are out there for travelers and how they can help. Easy peasy. So let’s dive right into my top five tricks to saving money on travel.
Do you have something to add? I would LOVE to hear it. Add it to the comments below or tweet your tip to me at @raisingdickjane.
5 Easy Ways to Save Money While Traveling
1. Earn Money to Travel While You Spend.
One of the best things I’ve done is to actually USE the points I’ve been accruing on my points credit card for travel instead of just letting them sit there! With the card that I have, I am earning points each month as I make my normal credit card purchases. These points can then be used to book and pay for hotel rooms or I can use the rewards website to purchase gift cards with my points for food.
All this time I was forgetting that these points existed or failing to use them when needed. Light bulb: If I was using the card anyways, it just made sense to benefit from it!
Tip: Be careful. This way only makes sense if you are good at using credit cards and can pay them off monthly. Having to pay late fees and a percentage rate on your card seriously defeats the purpose of earning points to SAVE money. And it’s not about having more credit cards, it is about choosing one that works for you and learning to use the benefits.
2. Get Rewarded for Loyalty.
Being rewarded for loyalty is easier than you’d think and most hotels offer a loyalty program – so why not use it?
One of the best tricks I’ve learned about loyalty programs is to download the brands’ app on my phone so I can keep track of my rewards. Otherwise, I have no idea where I stand with them and could be missing out on free stays or other perks.
Tip: I created a hotel folder on my phone and keep all of my hotel apps in one place. It helps to stay organized.
3. Use Travel Apps.
We just talked about hotel apps for earning loyalty rewards but there are a few other travel apps out there that can help with other details of a trip as well. For instance, I just recently got wise to an app called “Spot Hero”. This app allows me to search for parking nearby and find the best rate available.
For example, one time I found parking less than half of the price of where I was going to park with only a mere 2 minutes of walk time added! Um – YES!
I’m sure there are other travel apps out there that are just as useful in other areas. Know of one? Tell me in the comments.
4. Look for Discount Codes Online.
I can be pretty lazy when it comes to travel hacking but one thing I never skip out on is checking the internet for coupon codes. Seriously – sometimes the destinations put them right there on their own websites! It is so easy!
So, before I book anything, I always check out the brands’ website to see if they have any coupon codes available. I also check my hotel apps to see if they are running any specials. It never hurts to check!
5. Be Flexible for Dates.
Being flexible on what dates you travel can be one of the easiest and quickest ways to save money. When possible, I always check different times of the day and dates nearby when I want to travel to see how the price fluctuates. Sometimes arriving a day early will pay for itself!
