I knew that it was the right time for a new puppy to join our family. We were all excited – no, we were beyond excited! We had been visiting shelters and scouring the internet for months looking for the one who might just be our perfect match. This was something we ALL wanted. And now that he’s here, I have to say that it’s nothing like I expected. . .
We Found Mr. Right
I never thought finding a puppy to adopt would be so difficult. Yet shortly after the journey began, I quickly found myself entwined in an endless search of internet posts and stacks of printed off “hopefuls”. They all seemed perfect in their own way. Given the chance, I’d take any one of them home with me that very day. But it wasn’t that easy.
It began that every weekend we would pack the kids up in the car and head over to the local shelter “just to look”. Saying this helped keep us grounded because it never failed that we would fall in love, fill out the forms, and later find out that the pup had already been adopted by someone else who got their first. Which is a great thing, really.
…but if you want to know what it feels like to have a broken heart, be second in line for a pet adoption.
After following along this routine of emotional hijinks, we finally got the call. There was a rescue pup who was ready for a home and he was ours! Just like seeing your newborn baby for the first time, this pup was perfect in every way! We couldn’t wait to bring him home and show him all of the toys we’d been saving in preparation for his arrival.
Love At First Sight
I never expected to fall this hard, this fast. He was a dog. And while I knew that I would enjoy having him around, I never expected to feel my heart light up when he walked into the room. That’s weird, isn’t it?
But I was ecstatic. We all were.
And come to think of it, he liked me too. I loved that whenever I would sit down on the couch, he would promptly come over to join me for a few snuggles. If I moved, he wanted to move too.
I’ve heard it said that dogs will choose their “person”. Don’t tell the kids but I’m sure that it’s me. 🙂
It Was All So Unexpected
Having a new pup join our family has given me so many unexpected surprises. . . no, I’ll call them blessings. Just to begin, I’ve never been so motivated to go for walks or get out in nature! Having a pup around who desires this type of activity has me desiring it as well. To tell the truth, it’s actually quite fun!
Then, after a great day hiking in the woods, there isn’t anyone who can coax me into taking a nap on the couch like this pup! All it takes is him jumping up in my lap and promptly falling asleep. Like a peaceful baby, I don’t want to move and wake him. Secretly, I’ve come to enjoy these little breaks that I never realized I needed.
Speaking of things we need, this pup needs a ton of attention! Having him around has given the entire family a renewed sense of purpose and responsibility. The kids are also learning to care for his needs and in return, he is caring for ours by offering comfort, stress relief, and a whole TON of fun!
Have you ever seen puppy zoomies? Evenings in our home have become so much more fun thanks to him! When we decided to adopt a puppy, I knew that he would bring joy to our home but I never expected this much. . .
So, without further ado, we’d like for you to meet Cash. Our silly, sweet, and playful rescue pup.
I’ve heard it said time and time before, however, only now do I know it’s true. Adopting a rescue pup saves more than the dog, it saves you too.
Now, excuse me while I begin googling pet-friendly travel destinations. . .
