Buckle Up For the Drive of Your Life
I’m a car girl. I love to drive fast, feel the grip of the road, and revel in that feeling of pure weightlessness when launching a vehicle down the track. But besides being (a heck of a lot of) fun, it’s in these moments that I’m learning who I really am. And what I’ve learned is that I am strong, confident, and bold!
But don’t for a moment think that I was always this way. We don’t just jump in a car and know how to drive it. Nor do we step on the track and have the confidence to do so. It takes instruction, practice, and time to grow. And it’s experiences like this, at the Porsche Experience Center Atlanta, that help you lay the groundwork for drive of your life.
A Car-Lovers Playground: Simulators, Track, and Off-Road Driving
It’s hard not to feel excitement when you enter the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta, Georgia! First of all, it was a filming location for Captain America: Civil War. Second, it’s the history and future of Porsche all rolled in to one. And the best part is that it’s there for you to tangibly experience!
So what does a day at the Porsche Experience Center entail? Well, the details are up to you, but here is what’s possible!
Practice Makes Perfect: The Driving Simulators
After getting some instruction on what the day would hold, my team and I first headed off to experience the indoor driving simulators. Honestly, I was sort of happy that we did this first because it helped to take the edge off what was coming next. It gave us all a bit of “virtual” practice before hitting the track in real life.
I have to tell you that I still get a bit nervous before heading out onto the track, even though I’ve done it a few times before. But it’s a good nervous. The type of nerves you feel right before something BIG is going to happen!
Testing Your Limits: Driving the Track
After wrecking my vehicle more times than I’d like to admit on the driving simulators, it was time to head out to the track and put this practice to the test. Luckily, we were all paired with professional drivers who were there to guide us through the course directions and coach us on different ways to improve our current driving skills. And like any good coaches, they not only gave instruction but pushed a bit outside of our comfort zones.
The entire track consists of six different courses:
- Low-Friction Handling Circuit
- 1 Mile Handling Circuit
- Dynamics Area
- Wet, Low-Friction Circle
- Kick Plate
- Off-Road Course
Each of the course areas targeted a different driving skill. For instance, the kick plate course was designed to unexpectedly throw the back end of your vehicle into a slide, which you were then responsible for correcting. It’s a bit unnerving in the moment, but practicing this skill that has given me much more confidence when driving, especially during the Midwest winters.
Another highlight from the course was the off-road portion. Sometimes in life I feel like I need control over everything around me and that if I don’t have control, everything will fall apart. Although, on the off-road course, we had to learn to let go and allow the car to do what it was made to do. For instance, taking your foot off the brake while on a 70% decline doesn’t feel natural at all, but in the Porsche Cayenne, it was the choice that made our ride go more smoothly because the vehicle was designed to control the descent. In all honesty, it handled it much better than I would have!
With each course, a different driving skill is practiced. My favorite course, however, was the Low-Friction Handling Circuit. This is the “classic track” experience. It’s about getting into a groove and seeing how, with little tweaks, you can perfect your rhythm. With each pass you learn to do it just a little bit faster and a little bit better than the time before. You just keep going around until finally, you realized that you know the course and its every turn. After that, what comes next isn’t a surprise, it’s an experience!
Refueling in Restaurant 356
Driving on the track is a rewarding experience, but it also comes with the need to relax and refuel. After tackling the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta, I can think of no better way to end the day than at Restaurant 356. This beautiful, on-site restaurant overlooks the track and offers a refined, yet approachable menu.
Need something quick and lite? There are also a few other quick service options at the Porsche Experience Center that can make that happen!
