It’s not often my family all agrees on something. The simple question of dinner preference often yields 2-3 different answers. However, the evening that I opened up The Adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot and started reading it aloud with my tween son, my older pre-teen daughter started to settle in and also quietly listened. This new middle grade book by Josh Gottsegen seemed right up their alley.
We laughed.
That’s right. Full out belly laughed at this little chipmunk talking about hand soap and avoiding germs on the forest floor (because we can relate). He was cautious and smart. Characteristics that he fell back on for survival when he found himself suddenly on his own. Although, this timid nature was also a weight, gently holding him back from truly experiencing life (can totally relate to that one too).
As a family who loves to travel, we appreciated that this story shared it isn’t always easy to be bold. However, what I truly enjoy about this book was that it showed us it’s common to feel scared and STILL be adventurous in what we want to accomplish.
What’s This Book All About?
As a young chipmunk, shy, bookish Rockford T. Honeypot had dreams of thrilling adventures across the forest. However, timid of danger and germs, his only adventures were found in books and his imagination. When his family abandons him after a mistake that destroys their hazelnut business, Rockford sets off on a legendary journey beyond his wildest dreams. From exploring cuisines with a famous chef, training with ancient warrior monks, flying on giant hawks, finding true love, and much more, Rockford recounts his epic origin story of hardship, perseverance, and fortune.
The Adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot is listed as a middle grade book suitable for readers ages 8-12.
