Since movie theaters are closed near us, due to the pandemic, we’ve been looking for ways to make our at-home movie nights just as special as the real thing. So what makes a movie night special? Well, we think that it’s a great movie, tasty snacks, lots of stars, and the overall spectacle of simply going to the theater. But how to replicate that at home…
For the last couple of weeks, we’ve tested out a few different at-home movie night themes. Each of them adding something new and exciting to the mix. So today, we’re going to share our favorite movie night ideas with you!
Start with a Good Movie Everyone Wants to See
We found that one of the most important aspects of creating a memorable movie night is choosing the right movie. It should be something everyone wants to see. Or, if your family has a hard time agreeing (totally us most of the time), have the kids earn the opportunity to choose the movie night film by helping out around the house. Whoever earns the most “helper points” get their pick. That’s an all-around win in my book!
Although, there is at least one movie I know my whole family will agree upon and that’s SCOOB! This movie, recently released July 21 on Blu-ray and DVD, reveals the never-before-told story of where Scooby-doo comes from. Have you ever wondered how the whole gang met and why they started Mystery, Inc? This movie is the answer! But beyond being just a cute backstory to the characters, it’s a classic movie mystery in itself! A film that brings back my memories of watching Scooby-Doo as a kid in a new movie format that both my kid’s love!
Grab the Movie Theater Snacks
After picking the perfect movie, my kids will probably tell you the next most important movie night element is the snacks! Did you know that most stores stock boxes of authentic movie theater candy and, of course, popcorn to make at home?
While popcorn and candy will give you the closet thing to a real movie theater experience, you could also do like we did and make your own movie night Scooby Snacks! This fun recipe includes a crunchy mix of peanut butter, chocolate, and cereal squares. Mmm!
Head Outdoors Under the Stars
Another thing the movie theaters have is a lot of stars. What better way to make a movie night magical than to take it outdoors under the real stars?
There are a few different ways to set up your outdoor movie night. After doing some digging, we found out that rental places often have blow-up movie screen and projectors for rent. Or, for a cheaper option, you can also set up a makeshift screen with a sheet and project the movie using a homemade cardboard projector and your phone. Then, the only thing left to do is grab some chairs, sleeping bags, blankets, or tents and snuggle in for a cozy outdoor movie night!
But wait. How do you get SCOOB! on your phone for outdoor viewing? We use Movies Anywhere! Using the free Movies Anywhere app and website, you can access all of your eligible movies by connecting your Movies Anywhere account with your participating digital retailer accounts. It allows you to take your favorites movies virtually anywhere! Great for when we’re able to start traveling again.
Play Up Your Movie Theme
Depending on how much time you have on your hands, there are other ways to really drive home your movie night theme. Guys, if you don’t have time for all of these extras, don’t sweat it. There aren’t pictures of these ideas because I usually fall short on time to do them too. But, if you’re feeling extra crafty, here they are anyway:
- Create printed or hand-drawn movie tickets.
- Dress up as your favorite movie characters to watch the show.
- Put together movie snack boxes for everyone.
- Have a movie marathon day.
- Handcraft some decorations.
- Pair your movie night with a fun themed activity (this one I can do with the help of SCOOB! See below).
Did you know that the SCOOB! Blu-ray and DVD both include a “How to Draw Scooby-Doo” special feature? It’s a fun (and easy) way to bring a themed activity to your family movie night. And the work of pulling it together is practically done for you! Just grab some paper, colored pencils, and sit back to enjoy the show.
